![]() Jonas, is a young boy living in a town where everything is under control. There is no war, instead there is all peace. Everyone is assigned a task. This town may be peaceful but there are many bad things about it to. Baby's are killed if they are not healthy at birth, no one has feelings, and no one can see colour.
Every year in the town thay have ceremonies. They have ceremonies for the eight year-olds, who are becoming nine year-olds, nine year-olds who are becoming ten year-olds, and so-on.
At the age of twelve, you are assigned a job. These jobs are assigned because, the town needs people to work when the current workers become old. They are basically choosing successors for different tasks. The people who assign these jobs are, the Cheif Elder, and other leaders/important people in the community.
When it is Jonas's turn to get a job, he is assigned the job of receiver of memory. The reason why Jonas is chosen to do this task is because he has all the qualities the reciver needs, he has the capacity to see beyond, and he has intelligence, integrity, and courage. Being the receiver is a very honorable task, it is also a very hard task. The reason why it is hard is, Jonas will have to experience all of the painful memories other people have experienced. This memories include pain, death, hunger, etc. Will Jonas be able to survive his training? Read the book to find out.
